This car is currently stripped and being rebuilt. It also now has a found Log Book and confirmed to be the right car. When RallyStarion called in and saw the car, if he had of made an offer I was going to give the car away as long as it was rebuilt. Now I have the space to do it myself and happy I didn't give it away

If it's a JD starion, would you mind supplying details on it such as Vin#, whether D60 optioned
and colour combo ext/int.?
I'm keeping a registry of all 50 or so JD Starions sold in Oz.

That'll buff right out with some Kittten no2 and some elbow grease.

Great find and great you are bringing it back to life. Keep at it and keep the posts coming.

Cheers

Good to see someone else has a Group E starion from the 80's.

My Father Des Gibbs Race his JB (the one in my avatar) from end of 1984 until the end of 1987, thats when they stopped running the JBs, so i think even Brad ran a JB early in 87, don't remember the JD running that year so it could have been in 88?

Dad's last race for the Starion (I think) was the 1987 winton 300 (car was white at the front with NCR sponsorship) where they qualified(7th or 8th) next to Peter & Phil Brock running a VK v8 commodore. They had fuel blockage issues early from that small cone filter in the stock fuel pump.

I've restored this car to the 1986 winton 300 winning colour scheme, & have been running it in superTT & sprint days

The JD starion is in this footage from the 1988 Stallions Stables/2WS Production Car Series - Rd 3 Amaroo Park

Running around 6th but then blows gasket or turbo

Hi,

I actually joined this forum specifically after reading this very thread. As a race fan I well remember that Valvoline Group E Starion. I'd been a Mitsubishi fan since learning to drive in the mid 80s in a plain old Sigma(!) but always fantasised about owning a Starion (which I felt was a vastly superior and more sophisticated point to point driver's car than the much cheaper Cordia Turbo).

Being that sort of fan, I was also a big fan of the young Brad Jones (well, I still am, it is amazing what he and Kim have achieved over the years). I'd watched him go extremely well in Group E in the leaded Perrier Starion (as well as his occasional Group A Starion outings) but as has been pointed out, he was virtually a loner in 1988 when his was the only JD I saw in Group E - at least in all the NSW meets I attended. By 1988 in any case, the Mazda was the dominant car, soon to be usurped by the Supra Turbo.

My memory of those years is pretty spotty these days but I seem to recall the Valvoline Starion was not particularly successful, but not specifically because of the loss of power over the earlier leaded models. I think Brad suffered a few more racing incidents that year than was usual for him - possibly an unavoidable legacy of being caught more in the thick of it all than at the front of field as had been the case in previous years.

I well remember going to an Oran Park meet that year. Brad and Kim were there with an el-cheapo trailer and some near-decrepit panel van used as a towing car for the beautifully presented Valvoline Starion. I asked him for his autograph that day. I think he was stunned. Must have been one of the very first he ever gave! I seemed to recall this was yet another lacklustre meeting - I think there were mechanical gremlins that day - Brad and Kim between races were rather furiously working under the bonnet - not the normal inter race fettling - something was obviously quite wrong. I think it might have been something to do with the turbo.

Either way, these Starions bring back great memories of my race attendances in the 80s and were instrumental in beginning a life-long love of true production car racing. It is hard to forget seeing those Starions going flat out up the hill at Amaroo with the smell of sausages, burned fuel and oil wafting around in the background! To this day I would love to punt one of those JD Group E cars around the race track - I still think as a driver's car they were and remain an icon.

I was therefore really happy to read that this car that holds such dear memories for me not only still exists, but hopefully will be restored back to it glorious Group E days! I can only assume the car must have repainted silver later in life - it was definitely white with blue Valvoline decals over it back in 1988.
